About: Aims and Scope

Context

Chitrolekha International Magazine on Art and Design (ISSN 2231-4822) was conceived as an attempt at exploring the world of art and design. This Open Access Project was started after the founding editors found lack of scholarly materials and even popular resources especially on the art, crafts and heritage of Bengal and other places of India. The internet and the web have provided us with tools and ways to re-present and document the treasures which otherwise could not so far made much presence in the print world. The new technology also enables us to discuss the contents in wholly new ways on a converged medium where other media contribute towards better understanding. Therefore, we have broadened our scope to include the visual culture of the world.
This was started as an independent initiative by Sreecheta Mukherjee and Tarun Tapas Mukherjee. However, recently it has been acquired by Aesthetics media Services. It will remain an open access magazine. We appeal to the institutes of higher education, libraries and concerned agencies to participate in our Open Access publication by joining as funding organizations.

Aims

  • To publish both scholarly and popular contents on arts, crafts, heritage and visual history.
  • To document elements of the visual culture, particularly of the indigenous origin, facing suppression and challenges from the dominant forces of globalization.
  • To promote indigenous forms of art and crafts.
  • To disseminate knowledge and information about arts and crafts, particularly the lesser known forms.
  • To promote artisans and artists.

 Scope:

The scope of the magazine includes discussion of all forms of our visual culture with emphasis on the evolutionary principles of art and design. We would like to publish contents right from the primitive arts to the most recent digital arts. For the sake of convenience let us categorize them:

  • Primitive visual arts
  • Tribal arts and crafts
  • Folk arts and crafts, modern arts
  • Postdigital arts
  • Human visual culture
  • Visual heritage and history
  • Theories of the Visual

Types of materials to be considered for publication:

  1. Scholarly Researches: Academic research, survey reports etc.
  2. Scholarly discussion on arts and crafts: Apart from original submission, we will also consider seminar/conference papers and talks.
  3. Popular discussion: We encourage authors to submit popular contents aiming at the lay readers for making a topic particularly accessible in order to create awareness about arts and crafts.
  4. Notes: Short writings in terms of ‘Notes’ on a specific topic can be submitted.
  5. In Focus: Artisans and artists can submit their profiles following the format of the magazine.
  6. Review: Reviews of books, art works and exhibitions can be submitted following the format of our magazine.

Publication Model

From 2016 we will publish on Continuous Basis, that is, once the submitted articles are ready for publication after review, we will publish them immediately. Later on the articles will be grouped under an issue (like , Vol. 6, No. 1, Jan-March, 2016).

Policy of Digital Preservation of Contents

We are very much conscious of the importance of digital preservation of contents for future. However, since the magazine operates mainly on non-profit basis with no sponsor, subscription and APC directly from authors, we have financial constraints in availing the services of digital preservation. However, issues are sometimes released on Google Books in full version. We look forward to subscribing to some major digital repository in future.
